They created a improved version of they app. This 2.0 update was a paid update. I paid for the new version on my iPad/iPhone but I did not buy or install the new update on my Mac.

This does not sound like a big deal. Why bother to mention it at all. Well because something very unusual happened. I started writing entries in the new version of Day One 2 and it still synchronized with the older version on my Mac. Worked both ways. I am so shocked, I am so incrediblely happy.

Why because this is is not the normal behaviour. I updated Pages (Apples word processor) on my iPhone. But on my Mac I refuse to update to the latest Mac OS. Now what happens the older Apple Pages version can no longer open the latest version. If I create a document in Pages, Numbers or Keynote on my iPad/iPhone I have to export it to the appropriate MS word or excel or PowerPoint format. Only this trick allows me to import and open the file on my Mac.

Now you might wonder why not simply update my Macs Os. Well the terrible look aside of introduced in Yosemite, my adobe Illustrator cs6 crashes on certain operations in El Capitain.

I am not updating my Adobe product because those I can no longer own but have to “rent” forever. Effectively paying more than and paying for features that I often don’t need.

Not to mention that I had to be forced to update. This brings me back to Day One 2. And why I love it so much Imcould update but they did not break their compatibility with the older product.

Both Apple and Adobe nowadays are happy to “clean up” and modernize their ups so they just don’t work with slightly older (we are talking less then a year old software here). Clearly this is meant to force you to be part in this endless and pointless game of constant updates.

I am obsessed with updates and love new meaningful updates, updating keeps your devices safe. But the incessant need to bring out new bells and whistles is not actually helpful for someone who actually makes a living of computers and software. I get features like the Notification centre on my Mac. I am told this is amazing, it’s rocket science and I have used it twice. It’s pointless, as pointless as turning my Mac slowly into an iPad because the consumer experience is so much easier. I don’t want or need easy and certainly do not need to be told by a software hardware giant what I need to do

So there you go. thank you Day One 2 you really made my day.

Today I updated a the Day One up which runs on my iPhone, iPad and my Mac.
